Accelerating Human Reaction using Electrical Muscle Stimulation Without Compromising Agency
In "Preemptive Action" we found out that it is possible to optimize the timing of haptic systems to accelerate human reaction time without fully compromising the user' sense of agency. While haptics systems such as EMS and Exoskeletons are promising ways to learn new physical skills and automate work, they completely remove the user's agency. Here, we explore how timing the haptic actuation allows users to feel more in control. This work is a cooperation between Shunichi Kasahara from Sony CSL (more at https://www.sonycsl.co.jp/tokyo/7277/) with Jun Nishida & Pedro Lopes from the University of Chicago. This work was published at ACM CHI 2019 (full paper) and presented also at ACM SIGGRAPH 2019 (eTech).
