Brawl in Cell Block 99: How To Film Action/Fight Scenes - Video Essay

Brawl in Cell Block 99 is a prime example of how to film fight scenes - with wide angles and long takes. I just recently watched Brawl in Cell Block 99 and I have to say, this is one of the most brutal and engaging actions movies I’ve seen in quite some time. The way it’s filmed, the slow pacing, the cinematography, and Vince Vaughn as the intimidating Bradley Thomas makes Cell Block 99 just straight up amazing and criminally overlooked. It’s streaming for free right now on Amazon Prime and I encourage everyone to go and watch it asap. It’s directed by S. Craig Zahler, the filmmaker behind another underrated film Bone Tomahawk. Cell Block 99 is both a homage to 1970s grindhouse actions films while also feeling and being modern. I can go on and on about the many, many things Cell Block 99 does right but I want to focus on the way Zahler films action scenes. To put it bluntly - Cell Block 99 is a prime example of how an action movie should be pulled off, and every single director making any sort of action film needs to watch and study what Zahler does here.
