Sono state annunciate le candidature dei BAFTA Television Awards 2019, la cui cerimonia di premiazione si terrà il prossimo 12 maggio a Londra. Si tratta dei premi che ogni anno vengono assegnati alle migliori serie TV e programma televisivi britannici dalla British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
Tra i più nominati con ben 14 candidature troviamo Killing Eve, serie televisiva che vede protagonista l'attrice di origini asiatiche Sandra Oh. Prosegue così a gonfie vele il 2019 per l'ex star di #Grey's Anatomy che, dopo aver già conquistato un Golden Globe e un Emmy Award, ha ricevuto l'ennesima nomination come Miglior attrice protagonista.
A seguire poi c'è A Very English Scandal, la mini-serie basata sull'omonimo romanzo di John Preston e prodotta da BBC e Amazon, che ha ottenuto 12 nomination tra cui quella di Miglior attore protagonista per Hugh Grant. Patrick Melrose ha invece ottenuto sei candidature, mentre Bodyguard e The Little Drummer Girl ne hanno collezionate cinque ciascuna.
Non mancano tuttavia le polemiche in questa nuova edizione dei British Academy Television Awards. La serie televisiva pluricandidata Killing Eve infatti sembra non abbia rispettato le regole per poter essere ammessi ai BAFTA.
I requisiti di idoneità prevedono che sia le serie TV che i programmi televisivi devono essere stati trasmessi in prima mondiale nel Regno Unito e un emittente britannica deve averne il controllo editoriale. Lo show con Sandra Oh invece, nonostante sia andato in onda sul network BBC, apparterrebbe a BBC America e solo in seguito è stato acquisito dall'emittente pubblica britannica.
Tuttavia il comitato dei BAFTA ha dichiarato Killing Eve idonea per l'importante contributo creativo dei talenti britannici presenti nella serie. Inoltre sia lo sviluppo che la post-produzione dello show hanno avuto luogo nel Regno Unito.
